IET has the capability to perform proof-of-process and waste destruction treatability studies. We have an engineering scale PEM™ Process Test System that has been operational since April of 1997. The Process Test System is located at the IET Technology Center in Richland, Washington. This system is used to demonstrate the basic features of the PEM™ process. It is designed to process up to 500 lb/day of organic materials and 1000 lb/day of inorganic material. The test system is extensively instrumented to measure the key process parameters and syngas composition and flowrate necessary to establish good mass balance data. Most data are monitored and recorded by the process computer.

The Process Test System is available for treatability studies, which would be conducted as described below:

  • Quantity of feed material needed for engineering scale study is approximately 200 to 450 kilograms. Liquids, shredded solids, or small containers may be tested.
  • Hazardous wastes may be tested under a RCRA Treatability Study Exemption
  • Treatability studies for radioactive wastes, conducted at IET's Technology Center, will require the use of non-radioactive surrogate wastes.
  • Typical time for hazardous waste Treatability Study: 6 to 8 weeks, including analytical data, following receipt of sample.
  • · Non hazardous stream can often be tested quicker
  • Costs range from US Dollars $25,000 to $50,000 depending on analytical needs. Analytical costs may vary substantially dependent upon need for analysis of dioxins and furans.
